After meeting up with an old school friend a couple of years ago who had since become a very talented photographer – Rob, aka Rob Power Photography (don’t get too big headed Robert) and working on a few projects together we had been meaning to arrange a fun styled shoot together. I was taking part in the Fern & Field Open Day and asked Polly if she would mind us using another area of her stunning venue on the same day to do this styled shoot, she kindly obliged.
The inspiration came from the time of year (October) and the woodland location – a gothic shoot seemed to fit the bill. I contacted the lovely Rachael from We Hire Love for props, Ellie from Ellie Gill Natural Beauty & Wellbeing & Liz from Simply Beautiful Wedding Hair – all awesome suppliers I had previously worked with on a another shoot, all were very happy to give up their time and skills to assist.
Ellie from Bunston Bakes was providing cake for the Open Day so I asked her to deliver a black cake for our styled shoot. It looked at home on the antler stand from Hire Love.
Ellie’s very photogenic cousin Nancy offered to model. All that was left to organise was the male model & dresses. So good old Facebook came to the rescue which lead me to Jasper our “Groom” and having been on the look out for my own wedding dress – I remembered seeing the gorgeous dip dyed gown by Lucy Can’t Dance – Lucy was a star for travelling from Essex to be with us.
The brief for props & styling was dark & sinister, I think Rachael & David totally pulled it off, I couldn’t believe the efforts they had gone to to set the scene. They arrived with a van full of gorgeousness including tables, sofas & chairs. David somehow managed to hang a chandelier between two trees without a ladder!!!! My favourite pieces were the skull with antlers – was so happy when Rachael let me dress it with flowers & the large jar (which David & Rachael had bought for their anniversary) I filled this with carnivorous pitcher plants, moss and ferns.
Ellie and Liz have worked together a lot & are a dream team when it comes to hair and make up. I loved the 60’s inspired hair style & the strong look Ellie gave Nancy.
Floral styling originally was going to be deep luxurious reds & fern foliage, then I visited a local flower farm & found the large bright pink Dahlia & had to include it – I think it really pops against the sultry reds & that stunning dip dyed blue gown.
Nancy & Jasper took to the modelling like ducks to water – and given us some fantastic shots. Rob was brilliant – seems to make everyone laugh & has capture the dynamic of the shoot perfectly.
I am so happy with the end result of this alternative wedding shoot, and am grateful to all that gave their time and dedication to the project.

“Woodland weddings aren’t just for the sunny summer months, and they don’t have to be all about the bohemian look. This inspiration shoot today shows you how good darker shades and more gothic elements can look for your wedding day. And I love that the dress is white and blue, it’s not black, and it contrasts and complements brilliantly the deeper colours and details.”
